Deccan Papyrus

Artist Md Faim Islam’s Deccan Papyrus presents a profoundly reflective artistic inquiry into the intersections of ancient and modern cosmologies. Through the symbolic framework of the Egyptian zodiac, interwoven with the contemporary zodiac system, the work interrogates the enduring impact of Western hegemony and its reverberations across the layered complexities of society.

At the core of the composition, the goat—emblematic of Capricorn— functions as a central metaphor, signifying inevitability, resilience, and the paradox of yielding to greater cosmic forces. The invocation of Egypt serves both as historical reference and as critical juxtaposition: once the wealthiest civilisation, now a nation confronting stark decline, it embodies the cyclical patterns of rise and fall, prosperity and adversity

Rendered in a palette of golden and ochre hues, the painting evokes the timeless grandeur of the classical period, while simultaneously embedding a discourse on decline, transformation, and continuity. This fusion of symbolic language and historical reference positions the work as both a visual archive and a critical meditation on the tension between destiny and resistance.
